Thinking about an advanced or accelerated math class for middle school? In Carlsbad Unified and San Dieguito Union, placement into the faster math path is decided in grades 5 and 6, mostly from report-card grades and a spring skills assessment. This kit shows you, months ahead, which skill areas are solid and which need work, so there are no surprises in May.

Choose your level

  • Level A: Grade 5 → Advanced 6. For 5th graders weighing Math 6 Advanced (Carlsbad USD) or a similar advanced grade 6 course. Sections: decimals, expressions and equations, fractions, whole numbers, patterns and sequences.
  • Level B: Grade 6 → Accelerated 7. For 6th graders weighing Math 7/8 Accelerated (Carlsbad USD) or the grade 7 options San Dieguito sets from its spring grade 6 assessment. Sections: decimals, percents and absolute value; expressions, equations and inequalities; fractions; integers; ratios and proportions.
  • Both levels for families with two children, or who want to start early.

What's inside each level (28 printable pages)

  • A parent guide to how placement works, with the published Carlsbad USD criteria, the San Dieguito spring assessment dates, waivers and your rights under California's Mathematics Placement Act (SB 359)
  • A 40-question readiness check in 5 skill areas, no calculator, about 60 minutes (or two sittings)
  • A scoring sheet that marks each area Strong, On track or Build up, compared with the share of questions the district publishes for that area

  • Five gap-fill packs: a worked example, 11 practice questions and a 4-question re-check each, with answers
  • A 6-week home plan (20 minutes, 4 days a week) and a page on whether acceleration is the right choice for your child
  • A California standards map: every question is tagged to a California Common Core math standard

Honest notes

  • Every question is original. These are not MDTP, Star, CAASPP or district test questions, and they don't try to copy them. Practicing the real skills is what helps.
  • This is a readiness check, not a prediction. Districts also use grades and sometimes teacher input. No kit can guarantee a placement.
  • Criteria are quoted from the district documents available in October 2026 and can change each year. Buyers get free updates.
  • Not affiliated with or endorsed by Carlsbad Unified, San Dieguito Union, the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project, UC or CSU.
