Older students who still stumble on long words need practice that doesn't look like it was made for first graders. A Southern California special education teacher quoted in Education Week (Feb. 2026) called the supply of decodable books for older struggling readers "an absolute wasteland" (source), and about half of California students in grades 6-8 scored below standard in ELA on CAASPP in spring 2026 (source). This pack gives intervention teachers a ready, age-respectful routine: break long words into syllables and meaningful parts, then build fluency with timed repeated reading of original hi-lo passages on topics teens care about. Grades 6-8 use the RF.5 standards for intervention.
