Your diagnostic tells you what students need. This kit gives you the next lesson, and a way to check it worked. The Next-Step School Kit turns the results from the tests your school already uses (i-Ready, STAR, MAP, Amira, mCLASS and others) into ready-to-copy practice, a teacher model for each skill, parallel progress checks and letters families can understand, in English and Spanish. Every page is labeled with the California standard it practices.
Who it's for: K–5 teachers, intervention teams, instructional coaches and principals at one California school site who need to act on diagnostic results between test windows.
What you get: 271 printable pages for grades K–5 (math K–5, reading K–3), with test, reteach and retest forms for every skill and family pages in English and Spanish. One ZIP of US Letter PDFs. Instant download after checkout; nothing is shipped.
What's inside (271 printable pages)
- Math K–5 (6 grade books, 119 pages): skills grouped the way diagnostics report results (number and operations, algebraic thinking, fractions), from K.CC counting to 5.NF fractions. For every skill: a teacher model page with a worked example and what to watch for, Form A, a parallel Form B with new items for retesting after reteaching, and answer keys for both forms.
- Reading K–3 (4 grade books, 74 pages): phonological awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension with original passages. Same structure: teacher model, Form A, Form B and keys.
- Class record sheet for each grade: one page that maps every item to its California standard code, so you can see at a glance which skills a group still needs.
- Quick Checks: 1 to 3 minute paper progress checks for between test windows. Math fact fluency for K.OA.5, 1.OA.6, 2.OA.2, 3.OA.7, 4.NBT.4 and 5.NBT.5 (4 forms each), letter naming for kindergarten and oral reading fluency passages for grades 1–3 (3 forms each, with teacher copies and scoring directions).
- Family Results Explainers: a one-page letter that explains test results in plain words, plus a home-activity sheet for each of 9 skills. Every page in English and Spanish.
- California Standards Map: every skill listed with its standard code and the page numbers of its Form A and Form B.

How it works
- Open your diagnostic report and find the skill area flagged for a student or group.
- Pull the matching skill by its California standard code. Teach from the model page, then give Form A.
- Reteach what Form A shows, then give Form B to see if it stuck. Record both on the class record sheet, or in the optional Class Data Tracker.
- Send home the family letter and the matching activity sheet.

Frequently asked questions
Which diagnostic tests does the Next-Step School Kit work with?
It is organized by skill and California standard code, so it works with results from the tests schools already use, such as i-Ready, STAR, MAP, Amira and mCLASS. Find the flagged skill on your report, then pull the matching pages.
What grades and subjects does it cover?
Math for grades K–5 and reading for grades K–3: 271 printable pages with a teacher model, Form A, a parallel Form B and answer keys for every skill, plus Quick Checks and a California Standards Map.
How do I know if reteaching worked?
Give Form A, reteach what it shows, then give Form B, a parallel form with new items. Record both on the class record sheet or in the optional Class Data Tracker. Quick Checks take 1 to 3 minutes between test windows.
Is it a state-approved K–2 reading screener?
No. The Quick Checks and Forms A/B are progress checks. They are not one of California's approved K–2 reading difficulty screeners and do not replace your diagnostic.
How much is it and who can use it?
$199 per school site, per year. Every teacher at the licensed school may copy pages for their students and families for one year from purchase.
Are the family letters in Spanish?
Yes. The Family Results Explainer and the home-activity sheets for 9 skills are in English and Spanish.
Does it collect student data?
No. Everything is paper or stays in your own files, so no data privacy agreement is needed.
Pairs well with
- Next-Step Diagnostics Bundle: School Kit + Class Data Tracker (California K–5): it includes this kit and the Class Data Tracker with the whole-school license, so you can log Form A and Form B scores and see each student's progress by California standard.
- Class Data Tracker for California Standards (K-5): its standards list is matched to this kit's pages and Quick Checks, so you can log Form A, Form B and Quick Check scores and see a color-coded class view.
- K–2 Reading Screening Family Kit (English & Spanish): this kit's Quick Checks are not a state-approved K–2 reading screener, and that kit gives your office the bilingual notices, opt-out form and results letters for the required screening.
- Next-Step Math Kit, Grades 3–5: Quick Checks & Practice Packs (California): for grades 3–5 math it goes deeper, with three full grade books and two Quick Check forms per area.
